HOTEL AND RESTAURANT INFORMATION

Hotels
Business people most often stay at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel, Bayangol Hotel, Chinggis Khan Hotel, Tuushin Hotel, Continental Hotel, Flower Hotel, and the Edelweiss. The Chinggis Khan Hotel is the most modern hotel. However, many travelers prefer Ulaanbaatar, Tuushin, or Bayangol hotels for their central locations. VIP and official visitors often stay at Ikh Tenger, the government guesthouse, which may also offer some rooms to the general public. It is located a few kilometers south of the city in a wooded valley. Most people pay cash at the hotels. For those who want to use traveler's checks or credit cards, the Bayangol Hotel accepts Thomas Cook travelers' checks and several credit cards. The Ulaanbaatar Hotel accepts American Express, Master Card and Visa as well as American Express and Thomas Cook travelers' checks. The Chinggis Khan Hotel accepts Master Card, American Express, Visa and JCB.

Restaurants
Ulaanbaatar has a growing number of restaurants. Hotels serve breakfast, lunch and dinner during limited hours, usually from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, noon to 3:00 p.m., and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
All restaurants in Ulaanbaatar charge in tugriks, but some accept U.S. dollars. However, it is better to pay in tugriks since restaurant exchange rates are notoriously poor. Many restaurants also accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB. Reservations are accepted but are not usually necessary. Most non-hotel restaurants serve only lunch and dinner, have longer dinner hours (until 10:00 p.m.), and are less crowded.

Good restaurants include Hazara and the Taj Mahal (Indian), California (American), Los Banditos (Indo-Mexican), Seoul (Korean), Pizza de La Casa (Italian), Brauhaus (German) and
Le Bistrot Francais (French). Other good places for lunch and dinner are the Marquis (continental), El Toro (steak house), Anatolia (Turkish), and Millie's (American lunch and espresso). Two good bakeries are Sachers and Chez Bernard. There are also a growing number of Chinese restaurants in the city.

Bars
The bars that serve foreign beers, wines, and mixed drinks are located in the major hotels and throughout the city. Pubs sell a German style beer called Khan Brau, made in Mongolia by a German-Mongolian joint venture. Chinggis Khan beer is also available. The city's clubs and discos offer foreigners the latest in techno or a chance for a quiet, intimate rendezvous. Popular places for both Mongolians and foreigners are the Khan Brau Bar and Restaurant, Brau Haus, The Face Club, Emon, Paris by Night, Manhattan, and the Bridge.
