In addition, there are scheduled performances of the State Opera and Ballet
Theater, and the Folk Song and Dance Company. Inquire for tickets through
your hotel or at the theater box offices. Local hotels and bookstores
sell maps of Ulaanbaatar. The State Map Shop and the Central Post Office
have the best collection of maps. For maps of the countryside go to the
State Map Shop.
For the Opera, Ballet and Dance Company call 323-524
or 322-854.
Sights and Tours
Ulaanbaatar-based tour operators offer a range of tours.
Most common tours are to Terelj, the South Gobi, Lake Huvsgal, and Kharhorin.
Tourist camps with gers are popular with foreign visitors. Most camps
operate from May 1 to October 1, but some operate year round. Among the
many interesting places to see is Manjshir Monastery situated in a lovely
nature reserve, a 45-minute drive south from Ulaanbaatar. A small museum
is located near the monastery.
Hustain Nuruu National Reserve, 80 km from Ulaanbaatar,
is also worth a visit. This Reserve is home to the wild Takhi horse, also
known as Przewalski's horse, which freely roams in a protected area. Distinct
from the domestic horse, this species is the last remaining truly wild
horse. In 1994, 25 years after they became extinct in the wild, the Foundation
of the Preservation and Protection of the Przewalski Horse reintroduced
the Przewalski horse into the wild. The Dutch Foundation brought horses
from The Netherlands to Mongolia, their ancestral homeland. Since then,
the population of Takhis has increased significantly.
Rafting and Biking
Some tour operators offer specific tours, like river rafting on the Tuul
River, hiking on Bogd Khan Mountain and mountain biking in the Tuul River
Valley. See the Useful Telephone Numbers Section in this Guide.
Recreation
Recreation facilities are continuously being upgraded and expanded. The
best source for the latest information about recreation facilities in
Ulaanbaatar is to inquire at the hotel reception desk. Popular recreational
activities include cross-country skiing, sledding, bowling, miniature
golf, horse riding, and fitness clubs. The Hash House Harriers meet on
Tuesdays at 6 PM at the Bayangol Hotel in the summer. This is a great
way to meet other foreigners in the community.
